The Living End    1 Sept 2026

Yesterday, I went on a last minute trip to a theater I’d never been to before, Nuart theater in Sawtelle. My mom had texted me earlier in the day saying The Living End, an early film by Gregg Araki was playing. Believe it or not, but as a pretty big fan of Gregg’s work, I had never seen The Living End. I feel like this is because when I was first introduced to Gregg’s work, it was quite hard to find where his content was playing. Luckily that isn’t much of an issue anymore with his restorations and box sets from recent years. I was very familiar with his famous trilogy, and of course Mysterious Skin, which I also saw recently at Vidiots; introduced by both Gregg and Joseph Gordon Levitt which was really cool.

We ended up getting tickets for the later showing in the day, which was actually being introduced by Craig Gilmore, the main actor in the movie. I was not familiar with him but thought it would be cool to hear as it’s always nice hearing different perspectives from those that bring the films together. We showed up a bit late since the theater was a bit far from where we were, but we were welcomed by a super chill worker telling us not to worry. We got our popcorn and walked into the theater. There were maybe 15 people total in the crowd, and Craig at the front of the theater by the screen, talking and recollecting moments and memories on set and from that period in his life during shooting (the early 90’s). It was honestly such a cool, refreshing and inspiring experience hearing him say what he had on his notecards. He was soft spoken and friendly. He spoke for a while which I also appreciated, the whole thing felt intimate and legitamate, not like he was there because he had to be! He even told us how he was scared to film some of the sex scenes at the time, but how they’re probably quite wholesome compared to media now.

Eventually the film came on, and I feel like I took in every moment. Craig recalled the audio needing to have been re-recorded constantly from buzzes all around, and it’s funny because it’s such a common issue on a set + really shows this was a low budget film. I’ve literally experienced issues like they had and he recalled, and it inspired me to move forward with my film ideas immensely. Craig stayed through the whole movie and watched it with his husband which I thought was so sweet :’) and spoke to people after the show. My mom came up to him to tell him his performance resonated with her, and he gave her a hug. T-T

I really loved the ammaturity of the film’s quality and writing, yet the seriousness of the overall subject the film is about, and the dedication to creating and following a story with characters that literally felt like the beginnings of Gregg Araki characters. I think his characters and style is pretty distinct and it’s so cool that you can see that even this early on into his career. It was also kind of nice to see someone that wasn’t James Duval (no shame) for once in a film of his. I really loved  both actor’s performances, and the way they contrast and compliment eachother. The ending was also very bittersweet, and truly did feel a bit more wholesome in a twisted or sorta fucked up way, at least compared to Gregg’s other film endings.

I haven’t been able to get this film off of my mind and the beauty of the direction and performances.
